here's a bit of trivia for all the mums out there did you know that your baby's brain more than doubles in size within the very first year of their life watching the growth and development of a newborn baby isn't just amazing can also be a bit challenging especially if you're a brand new mum well here to shed some light on baby nutrition is Sarah aja registered dietitian and nutrition specialist at Meade Johnson and film television and stage actor Tara Nicodemo and most importantly new mum hi hello welcome so first things first Tara has the first year bin it's been difficult it's been also amazing um well it's just wonderful I mean to see a baby hit those milestones and grow it's a miracle really but all in all she's healthy and we're happy and on top of it you're the host of a new web series correct yeah and famila mazing milestones yeah that's right we we did the first season when I was pregnant last year and we just shot the second season and it's on new motherhood and pregnancy Sarah your registered dietician and the nutrition specialist for me Johnson baby products like enfamil a plus so in terms of nutrition what would you say are some of the most important things that moms especially new moms like Tara need to know well first off what's very important to know is that breastfeeding is always best when breastfeeding is not an option there is always infant formula available as you mentioned earlier a baby's brain more than doubles in size in the first year of life and 85% of brain growth occurs in the first three years of life DHA supports normal brain development what exactly is DHA well a lot of moms know the term DHA but I get a lot of questions from moms that think that DHA and omega-3 is the same thing but it's not DHA is actually a type of omega-3 fat in fact a baby's brain has omega-3 fat in it and how can we get DHA in our diet DHA is found in fatty fish such as salmon Atlantic mackerel and DHA and rich eggs even DHA supplements yeah during pregnancy I made sure I would eat a lot of the rich food mainly salmon that was my my food of choice actually and targeted breast feed yeah I breastfed for the first three months exclusively and then I got mastitis which is a breast infection and so after consulting with some doctors I decided to start supplementing the formula yeah it's a very personal and sensitive decision to make many moms you know they don't have the option to breastfeed they cannot express their milk you know and sometimes it's a preference they want to use infant formula so there are all kinds of different infant formulas available in different formats in Canada they're all iron fortified and many do have DHA and female a plus is iron fortified is the number one selling infant formula and it's backed up by years of clinical research do mums have a range of choices around formula yes they do they come in all kinds of formats and familiy a plus comes in ready to feed concentrate and powder and now they're ready to feed even comes in a resealable bottle which is great for moms are on the go just like Tara who has traveled with Eva all over Canada yeah we traveled a lot obviously we took a lot of flights so the ready to feed was really great on planes especially and at home I would use the powder version actually which I liked well that baby happy baby very happy baby yeah Sara and Tara thank you so much thank you to find out more about baby nutrition go to better living TV CA toward slash and Amil DHA
