Mom’s Tip of the Week 7

Did you know ... ?

At just 7 weeks pregnant, your body is already doing everything it can to keep your baby safe and healthy. In fact, a mucus plug has formed in your cervix; it seals off the uterus to protect your baby. When you dilate for labor, months down the road, your body will release the plug. Continue to do your part to support your body with good nutrition, regular exercise, and quality rest.

Your Baby at 7 Weeks Pregnant

What’s Happening in There

  • Your baby is growing fast. Your baby at 7 weeks is about the size of a blueberry, and he is quickly getting bigger—at the rate of one millimeter per day.
  • His face is developing. Tiny nostrils are beginning to form. Eye lenses are forming.
  • His motor development is gaining steam. His arm buds are growing into what look like paddles. His bones are growing, too, but they’re not hard yet—they’re still in the soft, early stage.
  • His umbilical cord has formed. The umbilical cord plays a crucial role in providing oxygen and nourishment from your body to your baby while also removing his waste.
  • Key organs are getting ready for a lifetime of service. Your little one’s lungs and digestive tract continue to develop as you hit 7 weeks pregnant. His kidneys are in place, and they will soon be ready to take on the important role of removing urine and waste.

Baby Brain Waves

Your Baby’s Brain Is Developing

The portions of the brain that will become the left and right cerebral hemispheres are forming while you are 7 weeks pregnant. Later on, they will be the largest areas of the brain and control many functions, including speech, movement, hearing, and thought. Over the next three months, your baby will form 100 billion neurons (cells in the brain and nervous system that transmit information), at an astounding rate of 250,000 neurons every minute! That’s why it’s so important to eat healthfully and take a prenatal supplement to make sure you’re getting key vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
