Mom’s Tip of the Week 16

Did you know ... ?

Morning sickness tends to end by the second trimester. So if you’ve been eating a whole lot of crackers up until now, be sure to go back to a healthful, balanced diet. With the visual development going on with your baby this week, it’s especially important that you’re getting enough DHA—200 to 300 milligrams daily.

Your Baby at 16 Weeks Pregnant

What’s Happening in There

  • Your baby measures about four and a half inches from crown (the top of her head) to rump (her bottom). She weighs about 3.9 ounces at 16 weeks pregnant.
  • Her motor skills are maturing. You may soon begin to feel movements as her hands and feet gain coordination.
  • She can hold her heavy head erect. Those neck and back muscles are hard at work.
  • Her facial muscles are forming. With an ultrasound peek inside, you might see your baby’s new expressions, like squinting and frowning, which are important steps in social and communication development.
  • Her bowels are maturing. In fact, her digestive tract can create meconium, a dark green stool.

Baby Brain Waves

Your Baby’s Brain Is Developing

Some of the greatest developments this week come in areas that will help your baby’s cognitive development—before and after birth. Your little one’s eyes may be able to perceive light at this stage and even make small movements behind those sealed eyelids (which now have eyelashes).
