Tips to Prevent Choking
- Know your child's chewing and swallowing abilities
- Supervise your child while eating
- Children should be sitting upright while eating - not lying down or running
Avoid hazardous foods which are cylindrical in shape or very sticky such as:
- Whole grapes (should be cut into four pieces)
- Hard pieces of food such as candy, popcorn, nuts
- Peanut butter (should be spread thinly and use smooth instead of chunky)
- Carrots (should be cooked or mashed)
- Hot dogs (should be cooked and cut into narrow, length-wise pieces)
