Find out what to serve and how to prepare food to minimize your toddler's risk of choking.

Tips to Prevent Choking

  • Know your child's chewing and swallowing abilities
  • Supervise your child while eating
  • Children should be sitting upright while eating - not lying down or running

Avoid hazardous foods which are cylindrical in shape or very sticky such as:

  • Whole grapes (should be cut into four pieces)
  • Hard pieces of food such as candy, popcorn, nuts
  • Peanut butter (should be spread thinly and use smooth instead of chunky)
  • Carrots (should be cooked or mashed)
  • Hot dogs (should be cooked and cut into narrow, length-wise pieces)
