Mom’s Tip of the Week 2

Did you know ... ?

Even in the early stages of pregnancy, your choices matter. 2 weeks pregnant is a great time to eliminate bad habits, such as smoking. Studies have found an association between prenatal smoking and smaller brains in babies.

Being 2 Weeks Pregnant

What’s Happening in There?

  • You’ve reached the end of your menstrual cycle. The gestational-week counting starts the first day of a woman’s last menstrual period (LMP), but there is no baby conceived in the first two weeks. Because it’s really difficult to pinpoint the exact date of conception, most doctors count back to the known LMP date (before conception) when dating the 40 weeks of pregnancy, also called your baby’s gestational age.
  • Your egg is released by your ovary. During week 2, your egg travels down the fallopian tubes in hopes of being fertilized by the sperm.
  • The lining of your uterus is thickening. This readies it to receive the fertilized egg.
  • You may conceive this week. It is during week 2 or 3 that egg and sperm are most likely to unite.

Baby Brain Waves

Your Baby’s Brain Development

Hopefully by now, you’re taking a prenatal supplement with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). One of the reasons it’s so important to take prenatal supplements even before you get pregnant is because the baby’s neural tube—what later becomes the baby’s brain and spinal cord—starts developing that very first month of pregnancy. While it’s smart to eat a balanced diet, a prenatal supplement will ensure that you take in the optimal levels of nutrients you both need. For your baby’s brain development, pay particular attention to consuming expert-recommended levels of DHA (200 milligrams while pregnant or breast-feeding).
