For Toddlers

Fat

What Does It Do?

Fat supplies energy and aids in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins

How Much Do They Need?

Toddlers 1-3 yrs   30-40% of total calories should be fats

Where Can They Get It?

Whole milk is recommended for toddlers until the age of 2.  Nutritious foods that contain fat (such as full-fat yogurt and cheese) should not be restricted for toddlers.

However, after 2 years of age, you should transition your toddler towards lower fat milks (skim, 1%, 2%) or milk alternatives.  Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide recommends offering toddlers a variety of nutritious foods, including a small amount of unsaturated fat every day.
