For Babies

Iron

What Does It Do?

Iron is a factor in red blood cell formation.

How Much Do They Need?

Infants 0-6 months 0.27 mg per day
Infants 7-12 months 11 mg per day

Where Can They Get It?

  • Breast milk, Enfamil A+® or Enfapro® A+®

At 6 months of age, it is important to introduce foods high in iron, such as:

  • Iron-fortified infant cereals
  • Fish
  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Liver
  • Legumes

Is cow’s milk a good source of iron?

No, cow’s milk is not a good source of iron and the iron in cow’s milk isn’t absorbed well by the body.  Wait until your baby is 9-12 months old before giving pasteurized whole cow’s milk.  Drinking too much cow’s milk can lead to iron deficiency anemia.

Note: Consult your baby's doctor before introducing solid foods to your infant.

Enfamil A+ has 1.22 mg of iron per 100 mL at normal dilution.
Enfapro A+ has 1.35 mg of iron per 100 mL at normal dilution.
